Gabe Newell, the co-founder and president of Valve, has revealed the company has multiple new video games currently in development.
“We definitely have games in development that we’re going to be announcing, it’s fun to ship games,” said Newell when speaking to 1 News [via VGC].
As expected with Newell revealing that Valve has multiple video games in development, the natural assumptions and hopes for many would be that the company has new Half-Life and Portal games in the works.
However when asked about what video games Valve might have in development, Newell would not answer or give so much as hint to what’s coming. His response on the topic was very cryptic.
“I’ve successfully not spoken about those things for a long time and I hope to continue to not talk about them until they are moot questions,” said Newell.
He added: “The nice thing is, by not answering those questions, I avoid the community coming up with new, equally-difficult-to-answer questions.”
While not the highly sought-after Half-Life 3, VR-only game Half-Life: Alyx arrived last year and was adored by fans. Serving as a prequel to Half-Life 2, Alyx was the first game in the series for 13 years!
Newell spoke about the positive response of Half-Life: Alyx, and while he did not say which games are in development, he did say that Valve wants to do more single player games.
Newell said: “Alyx was great, to be back doing single-player games, that created a lot of momentum inside of the company to do more of that.”
On a personal note, obviously I’d love to see more Half-Life and Portal games. Fans had waited over a decade for a new Half-Life, and as great as Half-Life: Alyx is, it cut-off a huge portion of its fan base by being a PC VR exclusive.
So while most of us would have given up on a Half-Life 3, if they could make Half-Life: Alyx a new-gen console game that doesn’t require a VR headset, that would be amazing.
