Warren Spector, Creator Of Deus Ex, Calls NFTs ‘Ridiculous’

Deus Ex creator Warren Spector spoke out against NFTs in a recent interview, calling them “ridiculous.”

NFTs, unfortunately, are still on the brain for a lot of people at the minute. Everyone and their mother is trying to sell you one. And in particular, parts of the games industry are trying to wiggle them in to make more money.

Thankfully, though, not everyone thinks they are the next step in technology. As having recently spoken to VentureBeat about his career, Deus Ex creator Spector was asked about his opinions on NFTs and the blockchain. “Here’s where I’m going to get in trouble,” said Spector. “I’m literally going to have people giving me hell about what I’m about to say, but I really don’t think I care. NFTs are ridiculous.

I do not understand why anybody would want to climb on that bandwagon. Ownership of virtual goods that can be instantly reproduced in unlimited quantities. Who thinks that’s a good idea? So NFTs, I have no interest.

As well as talking about NFTs, Spector spoke about the metaverse, and the doubts he has there. “The metaverse, sure, maybe someday, but honestly it’s going to be long after I’m gone. I’m happy about that. I like living in the real world. I don’t particularly find putting on a headset and interacting virtually with other people, not knowing if my wife is coming up behind me with a baseball bat–that just doesn’t appeal to me.

It certainly marks a change from companies like Ubisoft that want to go all in on NFTs. But at least most of the games industry doesn’t actually want them. Even if executives do.
