The Xbox Series S SSD Available Storage Is Apparently Not Very Much

A lucky user on Reddit received their Xbox Series S console around a week earlier than its official launch date.

In doing so they were able to confirm a few system features from enquiring fans such as how much space you will have for game storage on the built-in hard drive.

The Xbox Series S is a more basic next-gen version to that of the more advanced Xbox Series X. The Series S console is also digital-only as it has no disc-drive.

In this day and age video games can take up a lot of storage. Even 1TB hard drives can take a beating. Take for example Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone which can take up over 200GB alone at the time of writing.

It has been said that games on the Xbox Series S will be around 30% smaller. If that turns out to be 100% accurate that may give you room for a few more games.

How Much Space Does The Xbox Series S SSD Have Available?

When Reddit user u/spead20 shared their early Xbox Series S console, fellow users asked questions in regards to the system storage.

Now take in mind that the Xbox Series S only has a 512GB hard drive built into the console and some of the space will be taken up by the system and save data. So how much space are you left with for game installations?

The answer to that question is 364GB. So that means 148GB is already taken away before you’ve even installed a single game.

Let’s say that you’re a big Call of Duty fan. If you have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone installed on the Xbox Series S console, you’ll only be left with around 164GB.

Being left with 164GB also might be enough to initially install the forthcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but it is very likely that you eventually won’t have enough storage space to keep up with the game updates. Especially as it’s been announced that Black Ops Cold War will take up 250GB on PC.

Thankfully you can buy additional storage, although only certain types will work. If next-gen storage is going to take up even more installation space, it’s going to be very expensive keeping up with storage requirements in the coming years.
