343 Industries Clears Up Confusion Over Halo Infinite Microtransactions

Halo Community Manager John Junyszek has taken to Twitter to help clear up some of the confusion towards the use of microtransactions in Halo Infinite.

It’s been made no secret that Halo Infinite will feature microtransactions, but there have been recent concerns that the in-game skins known as “Coatings” will come at a financial cost.  In the most part that is true, but many of which will be earnable via gameplay.

Junyszek has now clarified that some of the cosmetic skins will be exclusive to some retailers and promotions, but the majority of them can be acquired in-game.

Back in the good old days, you knew that when you saw a random player online with a fancy skin, they had earned that skin by achieving something in-game, but nowadays most of them can be achieved via the credit card.

“There will be all kinds customization items (including coatings) that can be earned in-game and earned as special rewards,” tweeted Junyszek. “Will there be purchases? Sure. Is that the only way? Absolutely not.”

I personally believe that much of the concern stems from the fact that Halo Infinite’s multiplayer will also be released as a standalone free-to-play multiplayer mode.  With many free-to-play games, monetisation is very heavy indeed, as seen with the likes of Fortnite.

So I get players’ concerns, despite the community manager stating that most cosmetics will be earnable in-game.  In most cases this would be fine, but the other concern that we now have, is just how grindy will the progression be in Halo Infinite be?

Will it be such a grind that it entices players to spend real-world money to skip the progression and will Halo Infinite feature timed in-game shop exclusives to pressure the player into buying them before they’re apparently gone for good?

Only time will tell how heavy Halo Infinite may or may not be monetised.  But be sure to let us know how you feel by reacting to our Emoji’s below.

Halo Infinite will release for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2021.
