A new Resident Evil film is coming Summer 2023

This summer will see the release of a new animated film based on the Resident Evil franchise.

Resident Evil: Death Island will be a continuation of the animated series by Sony Pictures. The first was the animated mini series, Infinite Darkness which was released on Netflix in 2021. The sequel follows Leon and Chris Redfield on the island of Alcatraz during a zombie outbreak.

With only a 30 second teaser trailer, there’s not much we can see other than this. However, it looks to be as action-filled as its video game counterparts.

The synopsis

Up until now, the series has followed the story of Leon but the end of the trailer hints at Jill Valentine’s appearance. This means it will be the first time we see the pair on screen together. Additionally, the synopsis reads:

“D.S.O. agent Leon S. Kennedy is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit. Meanwhile, B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. The only thing the victims have in common is that they all visited Alcatraz Island recently. Following that clue, Chris and his team head to the island, where a new horror awaits them.”

Although Infinite Darkness was enough to warrant a sequel, the Resident Evil adaptations haven’t been met with the best reviews. This was seen during the live-action Netflix adaptation released in 2022 which saw the show sit at a mere 26% average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hopefully Death Island will be the exception when it airs sometime this summer. If you wish to catch up on the series before its release, Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017 movie) and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness (2021 miniseries) both start off the story.
