New figures show that the Nintendo Switch has hit 122.56 million units sold, officially making it the second best-selling home console of all time.
This news comes after Nintendo revealed its latest financial results for the fiscal year. These new figures reveal that the console sits in third-place behind the Playstation 2 in first place with over 155 million units sold and the Nintendo DS in second place with 154 million.
In fourth place sits the GameBoy and GameBoy Color handhelds with 118.7 million sales. Finally, the PS4 ranks in fifth place with 117.2 million units sold.
Reaching new highs
However, with the Switch still being a relatively young console, it still has time to get to the top spot. With 994.3 million sales as of now, the Switch has also sold the most games out of any other Nintendo consoles. The Nintendo DS reached 958.8 million units sold and the Wii follows behind with 921.9 million software units sold.
Console sales have slowly decreased over recent years with a 21% year-on-year drop but with the release of the Switch Oled, sales have remained somewhat steady for Nintendo. Additionally, the company believes these numbers would have been higher if it wasn’t for a shortage of semiconductors.
However, with the 2022 Pokémon Scarlet and Violet selling over 20 million copies during its first six weeks, the company is continuing to reach new milestones.
With Nintendo Direct 2023 airing later today, sales are set to rise even more with the release of much-anticipated games.
With rumours that the event will feature 2023 releases such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe and Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, it is set to be an exciting year.
