A PS3 prototype version of Gears of War 3 has been released to the public for the very first time, albeit via unofficial means [via VGC].
Some while ago there was a myth that a version of Gears of War 3 was playable on the PlayStation 3. Then in 2020, an eight-hour gameplay video was uploaded to YouTube. It really was a sight to behold.
It was certainly strange seeing one of Xbox’s leading exclusives being played on Sony’s rival console, and it’s still quite hard to believe to this day.
This version of Gears of War 3 was created in 2011 as an experiment by Epic Games to test out the Unreal Engine 3 on the PlayStation 3. It was never intended to be released for public sale. However, the prototype version of Gears of War 3 has been leaked to the public.
The prototype version of Gears of War 3 has been leaked by Twitter user PixelButts (what a great name), and is currently available for anyone to download.
“It’s the 10th anniversary of the Gears of War 3 PS3 data being built, so to celebrate I’m releasing it. I no longer plan to release prototype game stuff after this, as this was the last one I was sitting on,” said PixelButts.
There is a catch however in terms of how this prototype can be played. Unfortunately, you can’t just download it to your PC and away you go. Instead, it can only run on debugged PS3 consoles as these consoles have more RAM than the retail units.
So this factor will drastically limit the pool of people that can actually play this prototype. Though it is still incredible that this option is even out there.
