A Throwback Easter Egg Has Only Just Been Spotted In Thor Ragnarok

The world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow but that doesn’t mean we’re done with the first Phase. One eagle-eyed fan has spotted a sneaky Easter egg that harks back to Phase 1 of the world’s highest-grossing franchise, and it’s pretty impressive stuff.

Back when the MCU was just a seed in the mind of Kevin Feige, Phase 1 was made up of Iron ManThe Incredible HulkIron Man 2ThorCaptain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers. With Edward Norton being replaced by Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk after The Incredible Hulk, it’s a largely forgotten piece of the franchise’s history.

By the time Thor: Ragnarok came around in 2017, the Norton years were just a blemish on the MCU’s usually spotless report card. However, redditor u/Zeophore notes that Ruffalo’s version of the Mean Greenie has a particularly striking scar on his chest.

Looking a little closer (I mean really close), you can see Hulk has a round scar from a pretty important battle. The Reddit post explains: “During his fight with Abomination, Hulk is pinned against a wall, and Abomination digs his elbow protrusion into the same spot on Hulk’s chest where the scar is later visible. One of the very subtle ways the VFX folks kept the continuity of events from the two different Hulk iterations.”

In The Incredible Hulk, there’s a tense final battle between Norton’s Hulk and Tim Roth’s Abomination. Ironically, Abomination lived to fight another day and has become one of the MCU’s biggest mysteries. Alongside the whereabouts of Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross, fans are questioning what happened to Emil Blonsky after he was last mentioned being locked up in a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.

The MCU is known for tying everything together in a neat bow, and although Norton is definitely out, it’s interesting to note his tenure is still having an impact on Ruffalo’s character.

While we know William Hurt will be back as Thaddeus Ross in the upcoming Black Widow, the latest rumours suggest Betty Ross could return in the Disney+ She-Hulk series.

Elsewhere, Norton recently told the Total Film Podcast he’d be down to return to the MCU in a different capacity. He told the presenters: “Maybe as a baddie? Maybe I’ll write my own. I don’t know, I’m open to everything. I mean, I did Ask the StoryBots on Netflix.”

Of course, we know this isn’t impossible. Over the years, Alfre Woodard and Nathan Fillion have played multiple roles in the MCU, while Mahershala Ali is suiting up as Blade after being in Luke Cage, and Gemma Chan has been in both Captain Marvel and is starring in The Eternals.

Even if The Incredible Hulk isn’t exactly the best the MCU has to offer, at least the legacy of the original Emerald Giant lives on.
