Ace Ventura 3 has been announced, and it’s being handled by the writers behind Sonic the Hedgehog.

Jim Carrey’s last outing as the pet detective was way back in 1995 with Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. The comedian is now set to reprise his role as the hilarious Hawaiian shirt-wearing detective, in a sequel that’s being handled by Morgan Creek Entertainment.
In a conversation with Park Circus, the Morgan Creek team delved into its plans for the series [via Digital Spy]:

“We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise – it’s noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamouring for a 3rd instalment”
“During COVID, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.”
“Moving forward, we aim to continue to work with visionary filmmakers (as we have always done) and deliver the type of experiences that audiences love.”

As a character, Ace Ventura has been away for 26 years, so it’ll be interesting to see what shenanigans he’s been up to.
Carrey was previously reunited with Jeff Daniels in a sequel to Dumb and Dumber, which featured older versions of Harry and Lloyd. If Dumb and Dumber To is anything to go by, Ace Ventura 3 will be likely filled with gags about the characters age and the fact he’s been away from the big screen for so long.

That being said, Morgan Creek’s founder, James G. Robinson, previously stated that Ace Ventura 3 would be something of a soft reboot “in the spirit of the original”, similar to the new Jumanji films [via CinemaBlend].
Hopefully, this new Ace Ventura flick will help us forget the horrors of the series’ 2009 spin-off (shudders).
