Thanks to a spy report published by theonering.net, we now have the details surrounding the when, where and why of Amazon’s billion-dollar project. The official show synopsis explains:

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history,” reads the official synopsis.

“This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

As you can see, Amazon plans on visiting a place and time in Middle Earth long before the adventures involving any Bagginses, shiny rings or rightful Kings. This is bound to be a relief to some fans, as it means that the series could potentially serve as a prelude to Peter Jackson’s trilogy, rather than a reimagining.

The “Second Age” of Middle Earth is something that is detailed in Tolkien’s novel The Simarillion. The book features a short telling of the downfall of Númenor, one of the most powerful kingdoms of Middle Earth.

The upcoming series will feature a minimum of five seasons, each containing up to ten episodes. With filming beginning this month in New Zealand, it seems like we might be visiting the wondrous world of Middle Earth again sooner than you’d think.

While we still don’t know an exact date of release, Amazon’s Middle Earth adventure is expected to reach our screens in 2021-2022.
