Actor Andy Serkis reportedly crawled around on all fours in public in preparation to play the role of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies. Now that’s method acting!
Multi-award-winning star Serkis is renowned for this incredible acting, especially when it involves motion capture work. With this recent news of his commitment to the Gollum role, you can see why he’s proved to be so successful.
When speaking to The Guardian, Andy Serkis revealed that he was seen walking on all fours in public. When people noticed the unusual behaviour, the actor apparently pretended that he was looking for something on the floor.
“I used to walk on all fours offset when we were filming Lord of the Rings,” Serkis told the publication.
“I spent a lot of time in preparation for that [as Gollum]; I would go off for walks on all fours for hours. I did occasionally come into contact with other people, so I just had to pretend I was looking for something. It’s fair to say that’s pretty method.“
As mentioned, Serkis is known for his incredible motion capture work and has previously worked with Peter Jackson on his 2005 King Kong movie in which he played the titular ape. Serkis also played Caesar in the more-recent Planet of the Apes movies.
In the world of video games, Serkis has starred in 2007’s Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West in 2010, both of which are developed by Ninja Theory.
Personally, while walking on all fours may seem like unusual behaviour, in my area, it’s quite the norm.
