Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was one of the best games of 2019, and what’s even more impressive is how it’s continuing to impress now we’re well into 2020! In a recent earnings report, Activision Blizzard confirmed that Modern Warfare has sold more units than any other previous game in the entire franchise has over their entire lifespan. Well done, Infinity Ward!
The company also revealed they’d made an eye-watering $956 million USD in revenue, generated from microtransactions and additional downloadable content, coming from just the first quarter of 2020 alone. The picture painted here is a simple but pretty one: people love Modern Warfare, even though it’s been a long time since it launched.

Of course, we don’t know how many people were tempted to pick up Modern Warfare due to last month’s Call of Duty: Warzone. The new game, which is a free-to-play Battle Royale, doesn’t need to be installed with MW, but it can make for a fuller and more complete experience if you have the two.
At last count, Warzone had over 60 million players diving into the action, and the future is looking bright as the game’s third Season of content continues.
According to a new interview with Infinity Ward’s studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, Warzone will tie together a lot of the future Call of Duty games.
Speaking with GamerGen [via VGC], Kurosaki explained just how Warzone has made the team “rethink” CoD as a whole.

“We’re in kind of uncharted territories here,” he said. “Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many, many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it.
Call of Duty is a genre in itself. There are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways.”

He went on to add: “Warzone will be the through-line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty. It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant.”
