Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Season One is officially here, and with the butt-load of new content comes something a little less tasty – the microtransaction store. Of course, microtransactions are the bane of lots of gamers’ lives, so let’s take a look at Activision’s new CoD store and see what the deal is here.
You can find the new store via the dedicated store tab on the multiplayer menu, and inside you’ll find (thankfully) a range of cosmetic-only items. It’s great to see a lack of “pay-to-win” items which give purchasers an advantage over others, so kudos on that one.
The items you can pick up are things like finishing moves, operator skins, Blueprints, charms and stickers. None of them are necessary to help boost your stats, and all of them are purely for fun. So that’s great.
The bad news is that Activision has taken the Fortnite approach to the store, selling limited-run items with a “once-they’re-gone-they’re-gone” take. This is likely to see a lot of people throw their cash into the game, and probably we can expect to see people trying to flog their limited-run gear later.
The store uses Call of Duty points, which can be bought in a number of different bundles. The smallest bundle will net you 200 points for £1.79 GBP, and the priciest right now is 9,500 points for £63.99 GBP.
Also similar to the Fortnite way of thinking is the game’s new Battle Pass. The Pass will set you back 1000 CoD Points, and you’ll need to purchase a new Pass every Season. Hit tier 98 in the Pass and you’ll score yourself 1,300 points, allowing you to get the next Pass for “free” when it drops.
So that’s a brief look at the now-open Modern Warfare microtransaction store. Though it could definitely be worse, it could also definitely be better. If you’re going to throw some IRL money into the store, let us know!
