Charles Martinet Apparently Has Mario Dreams, Because Of Course He Does

Iconic Mario voice actor Charles Martinet (not Chris Pratt) has said that he “dreams as Mario.

For those of us who game a lot, the games making their way into our dreams isn’t too much of a surprise. There’s even evidence that video games can make us experience lucid dreaming more. So it should be no surprise that Martinet, after three decades of voicing the character, has dreams of Mario.

In a recent interview with Retro Gamer, Martinet spoke about how he prepares for a character. And apparently, something that helps is that the characters are always present.

“These characters for me are always there,” says Martinet. “I mean, I dream as Mario, flying over these lakes or over the ocean, in the moonlight, a little bit Galaxy-esque. And I sometimes dream in 2D.” There’s a slight romanticism in the way he describes the dream. Even if Mario always being in your dreams might be a little terrifying.

And in typical fashion for Martinet, he continues the interview with a lot of whimsy. “If I wake up in the morning and I’m having a lousy day, I’m like {Wario growl}. These voices are just alive in me, along with {sings the Super Mario Bros start jingle} {Mario} Go!”

Martinet also had some kind words for his first encounter with Wario, saying “One day I went into a studio and there was this gorgeous character Wario. {Wario} Have a rotten day! [blows raspberries].” Yeah, that sounds about right. Hopefully Pratt stealing his role for the movie won’t keep Martinet up at night. And hopefully he still dreams as Mario.
