Data Stolen From CD Projekt Red Is Reportedly Ready For Auction

It’s been a rough few months for CD Projekt Red. From Cyberpunk 2077’s disappointing release to hackers ransacking the company’s servers, the Polish publisher is probably hoping for some sort of break. Sadly, it looks like things about to get worse for the Cyberpunk creators, as the aforementioned hackers are about to start auctioning off its stolen data [via Kotaku].

Upon successfully hacking into CDPR’s servers, hackers found various pieces of source code, pertaining to games like The Witcher 3, Thronebreaker and Cyberpunk 2077. As you can imagine, source code of this calibre is worth a lot of money, meaning that the hackers are ready to cash in big by auctioning the files.

News that the hackers were ready to commence selling the data emerged yesterday on the Russian hacker’s forum “Exploit”. The discovery was made by malware data aggregator vx underground, who happened across a user by the name of “redengine”, claiming to have various bits of source code belonging to CDPR. This is, of course, the beginnings of an underground auction, the likes of which you won’t find on eBay.

The auction will apparently commence soon and will kick off with a starting bid of $1 million. There’s also a “buy it now” price, if you will, which requires a flat payment of $7 million. Hacking circles have suggested that the files will likely not reach even the starting bid, let alone the offer’s flat rate.

CD Projekt Red previously stated that it wouldn’t comply with the hackers after a ransom note was left in the wake of the breach. This was despite the fact that there was potentially sensitive HR data amongst the hacker’s findings, which could prove dangerous for those involved. CDPR has insisted that employees aren’t at risk due to the incident, but those who could be affected have been notified.

Whether or not the hackers will make millions from the files remains to be seen. If there’s one thing that’s for sure, it’s that CD Projekt Red is in for a long year.
