Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best games of 2018, and even six months on, its amazing story is still wowing players across the world.
Red Dead Online however, the game’s online counterpart, has seemingly made less of an impression.
Lots of people have given up on Red Dead Online – despite it still being in beta. Problems of not having enough to do, issues with griefers, and the lack of depth are just a few of the reasons people have cited as to why they’ve fallen out of love with RDO.
The huge gap between the success of RDR2 and the unhappy players of RDO got us wondering, and we wanted to know: should Rockstar Games have kept its online services to Grand Theft Auto Online and given us Red Dead 2 DLC, or was RDO the way to go?
In a poll we hosted for members of Facebook’s The Red Dead Redemption 2 Group, we asked if players would rather have had story DLC or RDO, and the response was overwhelmingly in favour of DLC.
At the time of writing, 76.6% of voters said they’d have preferred additional DLC for RDR2 over Red Dead Online.
“Personally I’d prefer DLC but I like online too,” responded one of the voters. “Rockstar is a business and microtransactions generate more income. I don’t think RDO will be as popular as GTAO.”
Of those who voted for Online, the replayability of RDR2 was seemingly a huge factor.
One voter said: “Online. They need to put the effort in repeat business. Story mode is awesome but once you have done it what’s left? Online is where it’s at.”
Not everyone came down on one side of the fence though. One Rockstar gamer said they’d like DLC and Online, writing: “My honest answer is both! I’d love extra story DLC but we also desperately need more to do in Online.”
Another agreed, commenting in favour of both and writing: “Well eventually the story is over but it’s incredibly fun and online has the potential to go forever but definitely could use some content to draw you in as the story mode does.”
What do you think? Was Rockstar right in creating Red Dead Online, or would you have preferred some extra storyline content instead?
