A Santa Monica Studio developer has suggested that Atreus could be a playable character in the God of War sequel.
As reported by Comicbook, Santa Monica artist Samuel Matthews appeared on the God of War Podcast and was chatting about what inspires the studio as they work on a sequel to 2018’s God of War.
One way that the studio has explored is the father-daughter relationship between Ellie and Joel of The Last of Us. Matthews revealed that the team at Santa Monica took inspiration from the duo of the Naughty Dog series.
A particular aspect that was explored was how Ellie started from being a supporting character to someone that stepped out of the shadows of Joel to be a lead in the story.

This dynamic is something that Santa Monica might be exploring in the God of War sequel, which is expected to release for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
“There’s just so much you could do with the character“, said Matthews on the topic of Atreus potentially being a playable character in the sequel.
Mathews also spoke about the differences in which Krato’s and Atreus’s approach to combat. Kratos is more up close and personal, while Atreus can attack from afar with his bow and arrow.
Matthews hinted that it would be interesting to see if, during a section in the God of War sequel, Kratos and Atreus would split up before coming back together later in the campaign.

It’s worth keeping in mind, that even though Matthews is a developer at Santa Monica, it seems he is talking theoretically. Though it would be interesting to see what would happen if Kratos and Atreus go their separate ways, even if it’s only for a short while.
