Indie video game Domina released notes for its latest patch earlier this week, which included a short anti-mask rant in the form of dating advice.
“TAKE OFF THE F*** MASKS,” the patch notes read. “Next time you’re at the grocery store, try showing a woman your face. Be confident, unafraid of the LIES — you might get a girlfriend.”
“Women like confidence. Women don’t like dudes who cover their faces in fear. What are you afraid of? Getting laid? Grow up.”

Wearing a mask has been common advice for anyone going out into public spaces during the pandemic. While it’s anyone’s choice whether to wear one or not, based on substantial amounts of data it’s been generally agreed upon by nearly every health organisation that wearing one helps to stop the spread of disease.
Still, this message is laden with right-wing and misogynistic language that it’s understandable to see why it’s getting criticism. Since then, the game has been getting review bombed. Its recent score on Steam shows only 16% of users have written a positive review for the game, giving it an ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’ score.
On Twitter, one user responded to the Domina account stating they would be refunding the game. The account replied with: “16 Hours ago, you sad tweeted this. 16 Hours ago, I was balls-deep inside my gf. Good women EXPECT and DEMAND confident, unmasked men who can still pay for things. Fact. Seethe, or learn.”
The tweet also contained a GIF of Don Draper from ‘Mad Men’. I feel like the writer of the tweet somehow missed the irony of this. The whole point of Draper’s character was about him being miserable and alone due to the fact he treated women poorly. He’s definitely not a cool guy.
Domina released back on Steam in 2017 and seemed to have been received well up until this point. Well, that’s one way to ruin your reputation in one easy step.
