EA’s exclusivity on Star Wars games is now over as Ubisoft has announced an open-world Star Wars game is now in its hands.

Disney has seemingly set its sights on a new age of Star Wars games, and the House of Mouse has resurrected Lucasfilm Games for the job. It’s been seven years since the Disney-induced demise of LucasArts as a video game developer. Yet, according to a recent press release, it seems that the media powerhouse isn’t quite ready to lay the brand to rest.
According to a blog post on starwars.com, Lucasfilm Games is to be brought back as the “official identity for all games from Lucasfilm.”
The statement is backed up by the creation of dedicated social channels, as well as a celebratory sizzle reel featuring various Star Wars adventures.
Lucasfilm Games (later rebranded as LucasArts) was a monolith within the video game industry, producing classic titles such as Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. The studio is now more commonly associated with licensed Star Wars games.

According to the press release, Disney intends to develop games “in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry”, meaning we could see a more diverse Star Wars line up in the years to come.
So what does this mean for the future of Star Wars games and EA?
The EA/Star Wars exclusivity deal is now seemingly over, and Ubisoft Massive Entertainment will be making a new open-world Star Wars game.
The director of the first two The Division games, Julian Gerighty, will be heading the new Star Wars project, which will run on the studio’s Snowdrop engine.
“We’ve got a lot of stuff we’re ready to start sharing with fans,” Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly told StarWars.com. “Because we’ve been working quietly behind the scenes for a while now, waiting for this moment.”
Earlier this week, Bethesda announced that it was working on a new Indiana Jones game alongside Lucasfilm Games, which might foreshadow the kind of relationships we can expect between Disney and developers across the industry.
