Eevee might be one of the cutest and most recognisable Pokémon from the Generation One bunch, but it turns out their name was originally supposed to be very different. According to a new Pokémon leak, Eevee’s original name in the West was supposed to be “Eon,” which makes sense when you look at the Eeveelutions: Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon.
The news comes via Twitter’s @DrLavaYT, who has been reporting on a lot of recent Pokémon game leaks, including the supposed “Pokémon Pink” game, alleged to be a companion to Pokémon Yellow.
DrLava tweeted: “Tons of data on Gen 1’s English localization leaked this week, including dozens of Pokemon’s early English names. One notable example is Eevee originally being named Eon. This explains the Eeveelutions’ names, which of course are just their elemental traits + Eon.”
To be fair, I always wondered why the evolved versions of Eevee had the names they did. I guess now we know! Although I am glad Eevee is Eevee…
As for that Pokémon Pink rumour, according to a new 4chan leak [via Resetera], Yellow was supposed to launch with a title which was eventually scrapped: Pokémon Pink. The unverified leak dumped the source code for the game, which allegedly comes from a recent Nintendo hack.
Again, from DrLava: “The source code for Pokemon Blue & Yellow leaked on /vp yesterday, and it’s almost certainly legit. The code references ‘Pokemon Pink,: a possible companion game to Yellow it seems ended up getting scrapped, likely starring Clefairy or maybe Jifflypuff.”
Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell whether or not the leak is legit, but it’s fun to speculate. With Yellow focusing on Generation One characters and creatures, I like to think it’d be Clefairy who’d be the focus of Pokémon Pink. Before Pikachu was pushed into the limelight, Clefairy was originally planned to be the face of the franchise, before being replaced by the yellow Electric-type.
