Elon Musk reportedly charging $20 per month to be Twitter verified

Update 02/11/22: Elon Musk has confirmed that the verified blue tick will cost $8 per month and not $20.

Are you happy to pay that fee or will you abandon the blue tick? Let us know across our social media channels.

Original Story 01/11/22: Elon Musk reportedly plans on charging $20 per month for Twitter users to be “verified” or risk losing their blue tick.

Now that the $44 billion takeover of Twitter has been completed by one of the richest people on the planet, Elon Musk apparently plans to charge Twitter users $20 per month to be verified.

This is regardless of whether or not they already had a blue tick prior to the takeover.

Pay up or jog on, apparently

Furthermore, if you already had a blue verified tick, you will have 90 days to subscribe to the $20 per month tier or your verification will be lost.

However, it gets worse. The Twitter team handling this project only has until November 7 to launch this feature or they will be fired. Yikes!

As reported by IGN, the blue tick initially existed to inform followers that the account with the verification was legit.

It also helps users tell the difference between genuine and fake accounts.

Twitter blue tick is a helpful feature

It’s also unclear at this time whether anyone that subscribes to the $20 per month will instantly gain access to a blue tick or whether a screening process will still be implemented.

According to Twitter at the time of writing, the verification is to “let people know that an account of public interest is authentic. To receive the blue badge, your account must be authentic, notable, and active.

A Twitter Blue account currently exists and costs $4.99 per month which allows users to edit tweets, gain early access to new features and more.

However, it should be noted that this subscription tier has nothing to do with verification.

Will Elon Musk charge for a blue tick on Twitter?

At this time, we should take these rumours with a pinch of salt until we get verification.

However, should this subscription tier be implemented, I can imagine there will be a lot of unhappy Twitter users.

It also wouldn’t surprise me if users are happy to lose the blue tick to avoid the added expense. We’ll update you if we hear of any further developments.
