Fallout 5 is coming, but we won’t see it for a long while, with Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 being the priority.
Todd Howard recently spoke with IGN, where he spoke about Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, and more. That ‘more’ included the fact that there are some very basic plans in place for a Fallout 5. “You know, we have a one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do,” said Howard in the interview.
IGN asked Howard if there were any chances of Fallout 5 being developed externally. Howard responded by saying, “Look, Fallout’s really part of our DNA here… We’ve worked with other people from time to time, I can’t say what’s going to happen.”
Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft back in 2018. And Microsoft took over Zenimax, the company that owns Bethesda, earlier this year. With New Vegas being a fan favourite of the series, this has led a number of fans to hoping Obsidian might make another Fallout game.
Judging from Howard’s response, there’s really no concrete plans in place for another Fallout game. Only that there is an outline for the next one.
Fallout: Outer worlds
Whether Obsidian would even want to make Fallout 5 is another question. The Outer Worlds 2 was announced at E3 this year, so the company likely wants to continue building its own, original world. Any prospect of a new Fallout game is years away from announcement though.
Howard also noted that he wished Fallout 5 could come out sooner than expected, much like The Elder Scrolls 6. He also commented on the long gap between Skyrim and Elder Scrolls 6, saying, “Would you plan to have the kind of gap we’re having between Skyrim and the follow-up? I can’t say that’s a good thing. I wish I could wave a wand and the game that we want to make, and we have or haven’t started things on just came out.”
