In case you missed it, Microsoft has officially entered into an agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. The move essentially gives Microsoft the rights to games including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Prey, Quake and Starfield. Yeah, it’s a pretty massive deal.

The shocking news constitutes one of the biggest financial deals in gaming, with Microsoft reportedly shelling out $7.5 billion USD for the rights to ZeniMax Media.

Though the gaming industry was rocked with the announcement, Fallout fans had just one question: with Microsoft now owning both Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda, does that mean Fallout: New Vegas 2 could happen?

Well…it’s not something Obsidian seems to know. The social media team behind the official Obsidian account retweeted that very question, adding simply a shrugging character.

Despite saying basically nothing, the comment attracted the attention of thousands of New Vegas lovers, who are now eagerly hoping that the new deal could bring back to life one of the greatest games in Fallout’s history.

Does the move mean we’ll be getting New Vegas 2? No. But does it mean that the possibility is now more real than ever? Absolutely. Keep your fingers – and toes – crossed for this one!

As for the future of Bethesda and Microsoft, it appears as though not all of the newly-bought IPs will become Xbox exclusives.

As revealed by Bloomberg, Xbox will honour Bethesda’s current PS5 exclusivity deals, including Deathloop. Future Bethesda games coming to other non-Xbox consoles and PC will be looked at on a “case by case basis.”

The move is sure to have an effect on Xbox Series X pre-orders, which go live on September 22 – the day after the news broke.
