The developers of Far Cry 6 have pledged that the game won’t suffer the same fate as Cyberpunk 2077 on last-gen consoles.
If Cyberpunk and Far Cry have anything in common, it’s that they’re both highly ambitious sandbox shooters. However, according to Ubisoft’s David Grivel, the studio is being “really, really cautious” when it comes to Far Cry 6 on PS4 and Xbox One [via VGC].
Back in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous last-gen launch lead to various lawsuits. The game was also removed from the PlayStation Store, while refunds for the game were also made available.
During a conversation with VGC, Grivel stated that last-gen versions of Far Cry 6 would be showcased before its release. When asked if Ubisoft expects there to be any issues with the PS4 and Xbox one version of the game, the lead designer provided some last-gen reassurance:
“No. We really aim to target maximum quality on all of these platforms. As we go in the next few weeks and months, we’ll definitely start showing more on different platforms. What I can say, and I cannot go so much in details about specs or things like that, is that both on previous generation and the new Xbox Series and PS5 generation, the game is running fine”
In addition, the designer delved into the technical capabilities of the new-gen version of Far Cry 6:
“One detail I can add about the new generation is that it allowed us to run the game at 60 FPS and in 4K, which is really cool. I test it on kits at the company and I can definitely see that as a great thing on the new generation, but that doesn’t mean that the previous generation is abandoned in any way
We’re really, really cautious about that, so we’ll show more detail and more info very soon. But yeah, we’ll care about all the platforms, both old gen, new-gen and even PC, Stadia, Luna and all of that.”
Hopefully, Far Cry 6 manages to strike a balance between impressive visuals and optimised gameplay. While many game developers are looking to the future, many gamers are still relying on last-generation technology. While Ubisoft’s last-gen pledge is reassuring, it’ll be interesting to see what Far Cry 6 is really like on PS4 and Xbox One.
