Global Chip Shortage Expected To Last Into Next Year

The worldwide chip shortage is still a problem, and tech companies are still searching for a solution.

We wrote last month about the challenges of the chip shortage for gamers. From PCs to PS5s, the chip shortage is putting a dampener on our gaming plans. But it’s a wider problem than that. From work laptops to cars, smart home items to phones – microchips are a part of our daily lives. And the shortage is taking its toll.

We heard last week that Intel has decided not to build a huge new chip factory in the UK due to Brexit. The company will still build a factory in Europe, to try and reduce the dependency on imports from Asia for microchips. However, since Brexit the UK is no longer in the running to produce the much-needed chips. It also means that the UK will still need to import the tech we need, rather than making our own.

Now we’re hearing that Sony is considering making their own microchips. Sony and TSMC are considering setting up their own plant in Japan to try and get around the supply chain issues that have contributed to the shortage of PS5s

TheGamer has noted that the PS5 isn’t the only console that is being affected. In an interview with The Wrap, Microsoft’s VP of gaming, Phil Spencer, said:

“When I think about, what does it mean to get the parts necessary to build a console today, and then get it to the markets where the demand is, there are multiple kind of pinch points in that process. And I think regretfully it’s going to be with us for months and months, definitely through the end of this calendar year and into the next calendar year.”

It’s possible that new producers jumping in to make microchips might lead to an oversupply in 2023, as we wrote about last month. But this complex problem is going to have long lasting impacts on all our lives for the foreseeable future.
