GTA 6 will set the ‘creative benchmark’ for all entertainment, says series publisher Take-Two. However, will fans expect anything less?
The latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series was announced back in February, confirming rumours and expectations that a new game is in development.
GTA 6 is official!
“We know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” said Rockstar Games in a statement announcing GTA 6.
“With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” added the developer.
However, in a recent financial update, Take-Two very subtly had filled up the fuel tank for the already high octane hype train.
“With the development of the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series well underway, the Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment, just as the label has done with every one of their frontline releases,” said Strauss Zelnick, CEO and Chairman of Take-Two.
Get aboard the hype train!
Not that Grand Theft Auto 6 needs to be hyped any further, but it does make me wonder whether Strauss Zelnick is dipping his toes in deadly waters here. Just think, GTA 5 is one of the most successful video games of all time. In fact, not just video games, but all forms of entertainment.
GTA 5 is also one of the most highly acclaimed games ever, by critics and fans alike. It’s why it’s been so successful over the last decade and has been Take-Two’s biggest cash cow. Not only as a result of its 170-million-unit sales but the continued growth of GTA Online.
When GTA 6 finally arrives, fans of the series will expect nothing less than near perfection. Some might even expect total perfection. So, it might not be the best idea for Mr Zelnick to fire a rocket up the backside of that hype train.
GTA 6 has no release date
At this time, GTA 6 doesn’t have a release date. Furthermore, we don’t know of any official gameplay details. However, it is expected to arrive in 2024, maybe.
In related GTA 6 news, a recent Bloomberg report claimed that the upcoming release will feature two playable characters, one of which will be a female Latino. If true, this will be the first time the series has featured a playable female protagonist since the original GTA on PS1.
If you can’t wait for GTA 6, hopefully, the rebooted Saints Row will fill that void. Saints Row arrives this month on August 23rd for PC, PlayStation as well as Xbox.
