The release of Gears of War 5 (or Gears 5 as it’s now officially known) is nearly upon us, one of Microsoft’s flagship series’ along with the mighty Halo. We’ve not had a great deal to look forward to with our Xbox One consoles, at least with exclusives, so Microsoft and The Coalition have hopes that Gears 5 will at least be some form of saving grace.
Gears 5 is said to be the largest game in the series yet and with Gears 4 releasing more than two years ago, the developers have had plenty of time to expand and improve upon on what came before, and this month’s release looks to deliver on that promise.
We last saw some juicy gameplay footage at E3, this time however; we have something a little more subtle, in the form of some brand new screenshots. The screenshots in question give us a hint at some of the environments that we’ll get to explore during the campaign with many of those locations also inspiring some of the competitive multiplayer maps too, as well as the ever popular Horde mode.
While much of the core Gears 5 gameplay will resonate with veteran fans, the developers at The Coalition look to take much of its combat from the narrow corridors to something more open to encourage exploration from the players, and these recently released screenshots certainly gives off that impression too. But never fear, because Gears 5 will have plenty of old-school level design for veteran fans alike.
Gears of War 4 was a reboot of sorts for the series and the story of Gears 5 will be a direct continuation of Kait Diaz’s pursuit of finding the purpose of her very existence, while taking us to new areas of Sera, that we’ve never seen before.
