Here’s Why Far Cry 6 On Console Doesn’t Have Ray Tracing

In a recent interview with a Ubisoft developer, it’s been revealed that Far Cry 6 will ditch ray tracing on next-gen consoles.

Ubisoft’s 3D Team Lead Programmer, Stephanie Brenham was speaking to wccftech.com. During the interview, she also confirmed that ray tracing will only be available in Far Cry 6 on PC. However, there is a good reason why Ubisoft made this decision.

When asked what benefits gamers will have playing Far Cry 6 on PC and new-gen consoles, Brenham replied: “There are a few common benefits both next-gen consoles and PC enjoy. That includes better LODs, draw distances, better ocean simulation, and HD textures.

Newer consoles also have 4K 60 FPS. PC has DXR Reflections & Shadows, Fidelity FX (FSR, CAS), unlocked FPS, ultrawide screen, and adjustable FOV.

Brenham revealed in the following question that Ubisoft chose to implement hybrid ray traced reflections, as it gave Far Cry 6 the: “best quality-to-performance balance and allows us to support DXR even on mid-range hardware. This way more players can enjoy ray tracing in scenarios where it’s impossible to use SSLR due to technology limitations.

So, when Brenham was asked if the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Far Cry 6 would feature ray tracing, it was revealed to be a PC only feature. However, at the expense of ray tracing, new-gen consoles will gain a smooth 60FPS, a dynamic weather system and more.

No ray tracing on new gen consoles?!

Ray tracing is a PC only feature,” confirmed Brenham. “On console, our objective has been to take advantage of new hardware capabilities, optimizing performance targeting 4K and achieving 60 FPS, for instance, all while ensuring new game features, like our dynamic weather system, are supported on all platforms.

Is the lack of ray tracing on new-gen consoles a deal-breaker for you? For me personally, I’m not overly fussed. Let us know your thoughts across our social media channels.

Far Cry 6 will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia on October 7th.
