Keanu Reeves In Cyberpunk 2077 Means A Movie Could Be Happening

The world has gone a little head-over-heels for actor and general good guy, Keanu Reeves.

Reeves took to the stage during E3 2019 to announce that not only does he play a role in CD Projekt Red’s upcoming dystopian RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, but he also kindly graced us with the game’s release date, AND birthed a new meme. Thanks, Keanu!

As more and more A-list celebrities take on roles in video games (hi, Mads Mikkelsen in Death Stranding), VideoGamesChronicle wanted to know whether Reeves’ inclusion in Cyberpunk means we can expect a movie.

Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the 1980s tabletop game on which Cyberpunk 2077 is based, had some very interesting things to say about Reeves’ role in the game and what it could mean for the future of Cyberpunk.

He told VGC: “I can’t really say anything on [movie rights]. But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility.”

Video game-to-movie adaptations have never fared too well in the past, but maybe with an exciting, sprawling and dynamic world like that of Cyberpunk, plus the likes of a certain action hero/dog-loving good guy, a Cyberpunk movie could actually be good…

The game’s description reads as follows: “In 2077, America is in pieces. Megacorps control life in all its aspects from the top floors of their sky-high fortresses.

“Down below, drug-pushing gangs, dirty-tech hustlers, and slingers of illicit braindances run the streets. The world in between is where decadence, sex, and pop culture mix with violent crime, extreme poverty, and the unattainable promise of the American Dream.

“In a world where you have no future, what matters is that you control who you are. To survive and protect your independence, you modify your body with advanced cyberware and take jobs others would never dare. You choose to live free, bound by no systems or controls-the only rules you obey are your own.

“Because you’re a Cyberpunk. In Cyberpunk 2077 you play as V-a hired gun on the rise and you just got your first serious contract. In a world of cyberenhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners, and corporate lifehackers, today you take your first step towards becoming an urban legend.”

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, April 2020.
