Loot Box Rumours Are ‘Misinformed & Incorrect,’ Says Modern Warfare Dev

Infinity Ward and Activision are hard at work prepping for the launch of the new CoD game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Due out later this month, the title has hit some snags in the run-up to release, namely to do with microtransactions and loot boxes.

During the multiplayer beta testing, a data miner discovered a few references to loot boxes hidden in the game’s code, but now an Infinity Ward dev has spoken out against the supposed leak.

Taking to Reddit, Infinity Ward Studio Art Director Joel Emslie said in a post: “Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare.

“What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.”

Well, that’s a relief!

The leak originally came from a fairly reliable source who correctly predicted information about the game before it was announced. The Gaming Revolution [via Dexerto] claimed that CoD’s “fair system” was gone, instead opting for supply drops that contain everything from weapons to emotes.

Although the news that this isn’t the case is definitely music to lots of players’ ears, there’s still controversy on the horizon for Modern Warfare.

There’s still the little matter of that year-long PlayStation exclusivity…

As revealed during the most-recent Sony State of Play announcement, Modern Warfare PS4 will have access to the Spec Ops Survival mode for a whole year, with Xbox One and PC gamers not getting to play it until 1st October 2020.

Despite its hiccups, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still on-track to be one of the biggest-selling games of the year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches October 25th 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
