For the first time, Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power will introduce female orcs into the series.
Now obviously, in order to have offspring, female orcs must have been present somewhere in the world of Lord of the Rings. But in the original films, we never actually see any. Now, for the first time, the production team was able to confirm that the Amazon Prime show will have female orcs.
Speaking to IGN with a first look at the orcs in the show, executive producer Lindsey Weber was the one to confirm it. “There’s some female orcs that I truly loved,” responded Weber when talking about her favourite moment in the show. Though she didn’t expand upon it much more than that.
It obviously makes sense that female orcs would exist. But enemies like orcs in lots of media only really ever show male orcs. So this will certainly mark a departure for the epic high-fantasy series.
the orcs in rings of power will be less battle scarred
The orcs that appear in Rings of Power will also be a bit different to the ones seen in Peter Jackson’s films. Ones that are earlier incarnations than in the films.
“The way I described it to my team, it’s a bit like these are the baby versions,” said head of prosthetics Jamie Wilson. “They’re not actually babies, but it’s them coming out from the darkness. So this is early on. So for example, if you go to past films about them, you’ll see them and they’re quite battle damaged and scarred and all that kind, because there’s been lots more battles.“
IGN was also provided with an exclusive first look at the Orcs. Which have gone for more practical effects over computer generated ones. And they honestly look great, proving that practical will generally always look better than CGI.
Outside of female orcs, the show is also set to be a more diverse one in terms of its casting.
