LOTR Studio Hiring For New Game Based On ‘Major Worldwide IP’

Weta Workshop, a special effects and prop studio best known for its work on Lord of the Rings, is currently working on a new game based on a “major worldwide IP.”

The studio currently has a job listing for a producer role that revealed the information. The description of the listing says that it’s looking for a game producer to join the team in Wellington. And it also says the game will be coming to PC and console. But it doesn’t specify which consoles it will be coming to.

While the studio is best known for its work on Lord of the Rings, it has also worked on Xena: Warrior Princess, King Kong, and The Chronicles of Narnia. The listing does say that it is an IP that is, “very close to [their] hearts,” so Lord of the Rings does feel most likely. A Facebook post advertising the position also said that the game is an “incredibly rich and inspiring license that will fill fans and players around the world with delight.”

Wētā Workshop’s games division opened in 2012. But the studio hasn’t worked on anything particularly prolific, mostly working on VR and AR games. This raises the question of whether whatever this major IP is will also take some kind of VR/ AR format.

If it is a Lord of the Rings game, a VR take on Tolkein’s world would surely be welcome by fans. However, it’s probably better not to overly speculate too much. The game is likely to be a while away. And an official announcement is yet to be made. But any which way, it will be worth keeping an eye on Wētā Workshop to see what they put out.
