Microsoft assures us that Perfect Dark is ‘not in trouble’

Microsoft has assured us that the new Perfect Dark game in development is not in trouble, saying that the way it makes games is evolving.

Matt Booty, Head of Microsoft Studios, spoke about the game at PAX West last week. He claimed that the game is doing well despite working with Crystal Dynamics, and that the way games are made is changing.

Perfect Dark is a reboot of the beloved franchise created by Rare. We had a reveal trailer for it a couple of years ago, but since then we’ve heard very little about the game. Fans have been patiently waiting for any kind of positive update about the game.

Matt Booty assured us that despite Crystal Dynamics being brought on to work on the game, it’s still in good shape. He said “How we make games is evolving. The idea of a single team under one roof really doesn’t happen very often anymore.”

“We just did this big partnership with Crystal Dynamics, and I read online that this must mean there’s a problem. It’s quite the opposite. You’ve got this veteran team at Crystal Dynamics, a big AAA team with over a hundred people that becomes available. Of course we’d want to work with them, particularly if they’ve made a game like that before.”

He also mentioned the need to be “careful” when approaching the new version of Joanna Dark, Perfect Dark’s protagonist. He said “things don’t age well”, and that the team has to make sure the character comes forward in the right way.

Hopefully the team is able to bring Perfect Dark into the modern era properly. Microsoft has a lot of big projects in the works, but a lot of them have seemed quite far away. We’ll have to wait and see how Perfect Dark ends up looking in the future.
