Miyamoto: ‘Nintendo Can’t Be Bigger Than Disney Because Of Parents’

As Nintendo continues to be one of the most-recognisable brands in the world, the company is branching away from video games to bring its worlds to life in the upcoming Super Nintendo Land theme park. Of course, it’s hard to open a theme park attraction and not draw comparisons to Disney, but what does Nintendo think of the comparison?

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the biggest names in gaming, and as pointed out by ComicBook, if you’re comparing Disney and Nintendo, Miyamoto would be the one and only Walt Disney.

In a recent interview [translated by Resetera], Miyamoto opened up about the two companies, saying that Nintendo will never be a challenger for Disney because of parents.

“Many parents want to keep their children from playing video games, but these same parents have no problem allowing them to watch Disney movies,” he said.

“We cannot seriously challenge [Disney] unless parents start feeling comfortable about their children playing Nintendo.”

It’s a valid point considering the stigma often associated with gaming – especially from a young age. With the danger of video game addiction, microtransactions, swatting, violence and more plaguing headlines across the globe, it’s easy to see why a 90 minute Disney movie appeals more to parents than a weekend of gaming.

However, Nintendo is perhaps one of the most cautious companies when it comes to protecting younger players. Along with its many console restrictions for parents, the whole brand is very family-focused. From fitness games to family games, Nintendo is always a safe bet when it comes to fun for all.

It’s a tumultuous time for the video games market right now, and it’s going to be especially interesting to see how concerns over addiction and loot boxes will change the industry in the coming years.
