Ron Gilbert, the creator of Monkey Island, has written a blog post addressing some criticisms of an older post claiming he would not make another game in the series.
Back in 2013, Gilbert wrote a post tilted “If I Made Another Monkey Island,” which very clearly started off by saying he’s not making another one. “I am not making another Monkey Island. I have no plans to make another Monkey Island.”
The post goes on to repeat this point, but also explain some of the things we would do if he made another Monkey Island. And of course, some people are taking this word as gospel, despite it being almost a decade old.
Now, in a new post talking about Return to Monkey Island titled “When I Made Another Monkey Island,” Gilbert explained why he wrote that post. And why it shouldn’t be taken too seriously now. “These were not commandments handed down and etched in stone on a giant tablet,” wrote Gilbert. “They were just random thoughts about a (then very unlikely) new Monkey Island game. None of these are promises or anything I owe anybody.“
what was the original idea?
Gilbert said that essentially, the idea for that now very outdated Monkey Island game was just “Guybrush chases the demon pirate LeChuck to hell and Stan is there.” He also spoke about how the art style of the new game is what he wants it to be. Making a specific point that Return won’t be a “throwback” game with pixel art. As he doesn’t want it to be that.
Disney was also thought to be a barrier for making the game he wants to make, but Gilbert says the company has been great to work with. “It’s ironic that the people who don’t want me to make the game I want to make are some of the hard core Monkey Island fans. And that is what makes me sad about all the comments.“
Rounding off the post, Gilbert highlighted point 17 in his original blog post from 2013. “The game would be the game I wanted to make. I don’t want the pressure of trying to make the game you want me to make… If you let me do those things, you will love the game. That, I promise.“
