Netflix Launches ‘The Netflix Of Games’ With A Bunch Of Exclusives

The streaming giant announced in a blog post that Netflix Games has launched, currently available on Android.

The app has five games to start with; Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast, and Teeter Up. Stranger Things: 1984 appears to be a renamed version of Stranger Things: The Game, and Stranger Things 3 was also previously released. The latter three seem to be standard mobile game affair, with simple mechanics and looks.

The blog post notes that there’s no additional cost to the games. “All you need is a Netflix subscription — there’s no ads, no additional fees and no in-app purchases.” It seems that the device limit will also be in place. So basic subscriptions will allow for one screen, standard for two, and premium for four.

Netflix initially tested Netflix Games in Poland, in August of this year. The test only included both Stranger Things games at the time. No one knows why they only tested the service in Poland, but clearly it was enough of a success.

The company also recently purchased Oxenfree developer Night School Studio. They obviously have an interest in more than just Stranger Things games. Oxenfree is known for its in depth dialogue system, and mysterious narrative. It would fit perfectly with the likes of Stranger Things and other titles on Netflix. It’ll be interesting to see what Night School develops for the platform, and if Oxenfree and Oxenfree 2 are included or not.

No other games have been confirmed for Netflix Games as of yet, but the blog post states they’re only “just getting started.” Ironically, there’s somewhat of a running joke in the games industry; ‘who’s going to be the first Netflix of games?’ It seems that Netflix themselves might in fact fill that role.
