Seth Rogen is set to voice Donkey Kong in the upcoming Mario movie, but he might be getting his own solo movie, too.
That’s according to GiantFreakinRobot whose sources claim the standalone Donkey Kong movie is in development at Illumination. The news comes after Nintendo announced the casting for the Mario movie at a recent Nintendo Direct. As much as we’d like to, we can’t forget that Chris Pratt is voicing the titular Mario. Co-stars include Charlie Day as Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
Seth Rogan is all set to voice the character of Donkey Kong in the Mario movie, which seems like a decent fit for the character. If the rumours are true, then the Mario movie seems set to introduce fans to Donkey Kong before spinning him off into his own movie.
Could we see a Mario Cinematic Universe?
This seems like the logical approach for Illumination to take. The Donkey Kong series of games runs alongside the Mario games, but introduces a whole new cast of characters that some gamers might not be familiar with. Cranky Kong is set to appear in the Mario movie, voiced by Fred Armisen. Beyond Cranky, there’s also Diddy, Dixie, and Funky Kong among the characters who could show up in a solo movie.
GiantFreakinRobot’s source couldn’t confirm whether some of the other Mario characters will be returning in the Donkey Kong film. It’ll be interesting to see if Illumination builds up the Mario movies into an established universe, MCU style. The games certainly have the mainstream appeal for it to be possible!
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’re yet to see a single trailer for the Mario movie, and it’s not due out until the very end of next year. It’s currently slated for release on December 21st 2022.
