Netflix’s The Witcher Is ‘More Horror Than Fantasy’

Netflix’s The Witcher is just over a month away from release and the more we’re hearing about it, the more exciting it’s sounding. We already know the series will follow the original books more so than the CD Projekt Red games, but the show definitely isn’t a straight-up fantasy series.

The Witcher’s Visual Effects Supervisor Julian Parry recently revealed to SFX that the show is very heavy on the horror element, something which lots of fans will be thrilled to hear.

“I definitely think it leans more towards horror,” Parry told the publication. “We’re definitely taking the fantasy out. I can honestly say we’re not fantastical. I mean, it’s fantastical but in a grounded horror sense. For example, with a Striga [who is cursed to live as a monster], that’s one gnarly-looking thing. That’s very unpleasant!”

If you’ve read the books or played the games then you should already know that the world of The Witcher is rife with mythical and terrifying beings of all different types, and it definitely gets a lot darker than the likes of Middle Earth or Westeros.

Whether or not the decision to place a heavy focus on the horror element of the stories will pay off remains to be seen, but it seems like a smart decision in my book!

Netflix recently unveiled the first full trailer for the show, which is looking even more impressive than the previous teaser suggested. Even naysayers of the series are now admitting that it looks seriously cool.

Netflix has stated of the show: “You can’t outrun destiny just because you’re terrified of it. Henry Cavill is Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher arrives December 20.

“The witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.”
