Recent reports have suggested that a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in development – and it’s not going to be from EA.
The reports come courtesy of industry insider Bespin Bulletin [via VGC], where it was claimed in a recent podcast that a new Knights of the Old Republic is currently in development.
The first Knights of the Old Republic (2003) was developed by BioWare which is of course now an EA-owned studio. Its 2004 sequel was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Both games were published by LucasArts and not EA.
However, the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic on PC, which first launched in 2011, is developed by BioWare Austin and published by EA.
Fans (including myself) have been calling for a new Knights of the Old Republic for years, and up until the recent revival of Lucasfilm Games, it would have been assumed by most that any new game would be under EA.
However with the revival of Lucasfilm Games, EA no longer has exclusive rights to the Star Wars franchise. The Division’s Ubisoft Massive studio is now also developing a title from the beloved franchise.
During the podcast Bespin Bulletin also refers to recent comments from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, indicating that he is also aware that a new Knights of the Old Republic is in development and it’s not going to be from EA.
“Amongst my digging, I heard there is a Knights of the Old Republic project in development somewhere,” said Bespin Bulletin. “I talked to a couple of people, and I also found out that Jason Schreier said that it’s not with EA, and we’ll ‘never guess’ who the studio is that’s making this game.”
Fellow industry insider Nate Najda of Wushu Studios corroborated claims that a new KOTOR is in development, and that it’s from a lesser-known studio.
Najda wrote: “It’s not as mysterious as you think. It’s just not a household name most people are aware of.”
During the podcast Bespin Bulletin also claimed that there’s a new Bounty Hunter game also in the works, though they’re not sure whether or not EA is developing it.
However they did claim that EA is working on a “smaller” Star Wars game believed not to be Battlefront 3.
