New PlayStation 5 Console Model ‘May Be Worse’, Says Expert

The new PlayStation 5 console may a smaller, but a tech expert suggests that the new model could be worse due to overheating concerns.

The new PlayStation 5 model is pretty much the exact same console that was released at launch. However, thanks to Sony swapping the heatsink inside of the console, the console design is a little smaller.

According to YouTuber and tech expert Austin Evans, the revised PS5 console is around 300 grams/0.6 pounds lighter. This should be great news, right? Well, not exactly it seems.

The console is lighter, but at what cost?

When testing the new model of the PS5 console, Evans recorded temperatures of around 3 to 5 degrees higher than the console version that was released at launch. Which of course raises concerns that this PS5 console is more likely to overheat than the previous version.

In the 13-minute teardown video, Evans did raise the concerns over the new heatsink that it is worse than its predecessor. Though it’s not an exact science, Evans seems to know what he’s talking about, so this might something for those looking to buy a PS5 to keep in mind.

There is some good news

Thankfully it’s not all bad news, because Evans also claimed that while the console is practically identical, as well as being a little smaller/lighter, the new model is also a little quieter than the original.

That being said, if you are lucky enough to grab a new PS5 console, I wouldn’t be overly concerned by this issue. Consoles often get a little warm from time to time. So, it’s always worth placing a console where it can get decent ventilation.
