Nintendo Apologises For Lack Of Breath Of The Wild 2 News

Nintendo has said that it’s not ready to share any Breath of the Wild 2 news in an announcement made during the February Nintendo Direct.

When Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma popped up at the end of the Nintendo Direct event, we knew something Zelda related was about to be revealed. Much to fan dismay, Aonuma immediately quashed any hopes of BOTW 2 details with the following statement:

I’m sure a lot of you saw me and thought there might be news about the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game. Unfortunately, we don’t have anything to share right now.

Nintendo knows that it’s being more secretive than usual, especially since it hasn’t shown off anything to do with the Switch’s Zelda sequel since 2019. Aonuma apologised for this and provided the following update in terms of the project’s development:

Development is proceeding smoothly, and we should be able to bring you some new information this year. For now, we’ll have to ask you to wait just a bit longer.

For some fans, going on to then unveil Skyward Sword HD as the Direct event’s big Zelda announcement merely added salt to the wound. Neither Aonuma nor Nintendo disclosed the exact reasons why Breath of the Wild 2 is still not ready for public eyes, but it could be symptomatic of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s entirely possible that there’s more going on at Nintendo than meets the eye. Various rumours have emerged as of late regarding the development of a “Super Switch”, which supports 4K resolutions and 60 fps gameplay. Perhaps if this is true, then BOTW 2 is being created with this in mind, meaning in-game footage could be revealed alongside the rumoured hardware.

Of course, that is complete speculation and in no way factual. All we know for know is that Nintendo’s still got Breath of the Wild 2 in the oven. Hopefully, we’ll be getting a big slice of Zelda goodness this year at some point (hurry up, the fans are ravenous!).
