Nintendo is planning to take its most famous franchises further than it ever has before, with a theme park to open in Japan next year and now, a new Mario movie.
Sorry to remind you all, but there was once a Super Mario Bros. movie, and it was terrible. Released in 1993, the film completely flopped and it’s best if you don’t look into it. It was a dark time for Mario fans the world over, and it’s best left just where it is now – in the past.
Anyway, it’s now 2019 and we have some of the biggest names in gaming hitting the big screen soon, including everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog Sonic as well as a Pikachu who’s voiced by Ryan Reynolds, so it makes sense for Nintendo to try and do the Mario brothers some justice right?
Well, Nintendo has confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. movie is in the works, and it’s planned to release in 2022 [via Ladbible]. Distributed by Universal Pictures and produced by Nintendo’s golden boy, Shigeru Miyamoto himself, this one is hopefully going to be better than the last.
I wonder if they’re going to call it the New Super Mario Bros. Movie, following the trend of the revamped Super Mario Bros. games that have the world “New” slapped in the front of their titles…
If you can’t wait until 2022 to see your favourite game characters on the big screen then don’t worry, Detective Pikachu will be releasing in just a couple of months’ time (May 2019).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only is a sequel to Detective Pikachu already in the works, but Oren Uziel has been chosen to write the script. You may not know his name, but his work includes 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox. He’s also worked on upcoming movies such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Men in Black International.
Are you happy with the focus on games at the cinema?
