The sequel to Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty was first announced five years ago and has been delayed various times throughout its development. Now, in a Q&A with WCCFtech, Lorne Lanning has shared some details on what to expect when the game launches on 6th April 2021.

Lanning was asked how long Oddworld: Soulstorm takes to complete, with the creator providing the following explanation of the game’s length:

“Depends on your type of gaming. The game will be about 20 hours first playthrough, but if you are an achievement or stats hunter, you can easily spend dozens of hours enjoying Soulstorm where our previous games had nowhere near the replayability.”

The Oddworld series is highly replayable, especially when it comes to 100% completion. Saving all your Mudokon friends is no easy task and usually involves finding secret rooms and passageways. Soulstorm is set to be the biggest Oddworld game yet, so it’s play length doesn’t come as a surprise.

The Q&A also delved into the technical side of Soulstorm, as Lanning about the game’s performance settings, specifically on the PS5:

“Our goal is to take advantage of specific PS5’s technical advancements that can increase a
player’s emotional connection to Abe. Soulstorm runs at 60fps at 1440p on the PS5 and 1080p at 30fps on the PS4. The gameplay experience will be the same whether you play on PC, PS4, or PS5.

PS5’s technical advancements do provide us the opportunity to add some additional features that increase visual fidelity from the PS5 and the emotional connection players will feel with Abe.”

Soulstorm’s 1440p resolution might come as a surprise to some, but it’s more common than you think. Reducing a game’s resolution is a tactic used to increase frame rate performance, which some experiences rely on.

Soulstorm’s gameplay looks pretty frantic, so prioritising a steady 60 frames per second makes sense. The PS5 doesn’t support 1440p output, so the game will likely be upscaled to 4K when it comes to being displayed.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is coming to the PS4, PS5 and PC via the Epic Game Store on 6th April 2021. It will be one of your PS5 PlayStation Plus games for April.
