Overwatch Director Doesn’t Know When Overwatch 2 Will Be Released

The heavily-rumoured Overwatch 2 was officially announced to world at BlizzCon 2019, but it doesn’t sound like it’s coming anytime soon.

In an interview with PCGamer, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan admitted that the developers don’t have any idea when the sequel will be hitting the shelves which explains why the announcement came without a release window.

“I don’t know. I have no idea,” Kaplan told the publication. “Like, just let us make it great, that’s what we care about more than anything. We don’t have a date in mind.”

Although it might not be the news we were hoping for, it makes a lot of sense. Overwatch has only recently made its way to the Nintendo Switch, and with millions of players across the globe, there’s still a lot of life left in the game.

What we saw of Overwatch 2 during BlizzCon 2019 does look seriously fun though. The new game will still have all of the original heroes and maps that we’re all used to, but with some extra new features thrown into the mix.

A new 6v6 PvP mode called Push will be added, in which two teams will race to make a robot push the specific map’s objective to their opponent’s. As well as being playable in Casual and Competitive modes, Push will also become a part of the Overwatch League.

Other new additions hinted at include more PvE content, with Kaplan also announcing there will be a “complete story experience.” Story Missions will see players in four-player co-op missions against the Omnic forces.

Hero Missions will also offer up a new co-op experience that will allow players to level up character and gain new abilities through customisation options.

It’s likely that we won’t be seeing Overwatch 2 until the launch of the next console generation, which will be during the Holiday period of 2020.
