Last year it seemed that Sony and Pacific Rim: Uprising director, Steven S. DeKnight, were set to team up to bring God of War to the silver screen.
At the time, DeKnight told ComicBook that he’d already spoken to Sony about a potential movie after tweeting his praise of the game.
However, that was nearly 12 months ago and we’ve not heard anything since, leading to the question: what’s happened to the God of War movie?
At the time, DeKnight said: “I had some early conversations with the good people at Sony PlayStation about it and my biggest thing is, look, you gotta approach it like a book.
“Approach it like adapting Jaws. For people who’ve read Jaws, the movie is very different but they’re both fantastic. So you have to be able to take the source material and make it work as a movie.”
Despite it looking like a promising partnership back in September 2018, there’s been no updates since, which is a little surprising as DeKnight had already set his sights on actor Dave Bautista to play the role of Kratos.
There might be a reason for the radio silence though, as earlier this month, Sony revealed PlayStation Productions, its own studio which would bring classic Sony IPs to the silver and the small screens. Considering just how big of a hit 2018’s God of War was, it’s likely it’s going to be one of the first franchises PlayStation Productions will want to get its teeth into.
If that’s the case, it makes sense to have heard nothing about a GoW movie recently…
Whether or not PlayStation Productions really does plan on a GoW adaptation – be it a movie or a television series – and whether it will have DeKnight and Bautista, remains to be seen. And that’s even if we get a God of War movie at all.
Would you have liked to see DeKnight and Bautista take on the story of Kratos?
This comes soon after God of War hit an incredible units sold milestone.
