If one thing is certain, it’s that closed console ecosystems are becoming a thing of the past. From portable powerhouses like the Steam Deck that can, in theory, run any PC storefront to even PlayStation and Xbox games being available on Steam and the Windows store, the industry is now almost unrecognisable. However, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has rejected claims that Xbox Game Pass is coming to Nintendo Switch.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar, Spencer explained why Game Pass isn’t going to be heading to closed platforms like the Nintendo Switch:
“You know, it’s the right question because people usually ask me about releasing one individual game or another. And what I say is I want the full Xbox experience to be something that we deliver. We have no plans to bring it to any other kind of closed platforms right now, mainly because those closed platforms don’t want something like Game Pass. There’s a ton of open platforms out there for us to grow in: the web, PC, and mobile. So all of our focus, frankly, is on those platforms.”
Makes sense, right? Well, at the moment, yes. However, the walls of console exclusivity are becoming ever fragile. Therefore, we could see companies like Microsoft and Nintendo team together in the future to achieve common goals. After all, if Valve’s Steam Deck plans pan out, it could usurp the handheld throne from Nintendo. By reinforcing its current lineup with the power of Game Pass, the Switch could extend its reign for a while longer.
It’s needless to say that Phil Spencer’s clarification is disappointing for Switch owners and Game Pass subscribers alike. Yet, perhaps Nintendo and Microsoft will come to some sort of agreement in the future. After all, both companies appear to be as thick as thieves, with various collaborations having emerged over the few years. I mean, who’d have thought that Minecraft Steve would ever come to smash? All I’m saying is, perhaps the industry will surprise us again somewhere down the line.
