If you’re familiar with PUBG: Battlegrounds (formerly known as ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’), then you’ll perhaps already know that “PlayerUnknown” is Brendan Greene, the game’s designer. Credited as the creator of the battle royale genre, Greene first worked on mods for DayZ before eventually being recruited by Sony to make a “battle royale” mode for H1Z1.
Of course, it didn’t take long for the designer’s H1Z1: King of the Kill mode to catch the attention of Krafton, who eventually facilitated the creation of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The result? Well, let’s just say Greene has made his mark in video game history.

So, what’s PlayerUnknown going to do next? Well, the designer is setting up his own Netherlands based studio. In a recent press release, Greene outlined what he hopes to achieve while thanking Krafton and the PUBG team:
“I’m so very grateful to everyone at PUBG and Krafton for taking a chance on me and for the opportunities they afforded me over the past four years. Today, I’m excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I’ve envisaged for years. Again, I’m thankful to everyone at Krafton for supporting my plans, and I’ll have more to reveal more about our project at a later date.”
What’s next for PlayerUnknown?
So, what kind of game is Greene aiming to make? Well, according to PCGamesN, the newly formed studio will be put to work on “exploring the systems needed to enable massive scale within open-world games“. While open-world experiences are a dime a dozen, perhaps Greene is about to flesh out a new sub-genre within the concept.

Here’s hoping Greene and his new studio are on to something big. Perhaps he has a groundbreaking new idea that will shake up the industry. Or, maybe the designer wants to craft something more traditional. Regardless of what’s in store, this new studio will likely make something that will shake up the industry yet again.
