PlayStation has revealed plans to acquire Savage Game Studios, a team that has a focus on mobile game development.
News of the pending acquisition was announced on the PS Blog by the head of PlayStation Studios, Herman Hulst. Once this acquisition is finalised, it will be yet another new studio under the Sony umbrella.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Savage Game Studios,” announced Hulst in a Tweet. “They join a new independent PlayStation Studios Mobile Division whose mission is to reach even more new players around the world.”
Savage Games has two studios
Additionally, Savage Game Studios consists of two European studios. One is located in Berlin, Germany while the other has its home in Helsinki, Sweden.
Savage Game Studios is “a hugely talented team of creatives with many years of experience making some of the most popular mobile games enjoyed by players around the world,” continued Hulst.

In the same PS Blog post announcing the acquisition, Sony also confirmed that Savage Game Studios will be joining Sony’s newly formed PlayStation Studios Mobile Division.
Furthermore, this new division is said to: “operate independently from our console development and focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.”
PlayStation Studios Mobile has AAA games in production
Hulst also confirmed that Savage Game Studios is already working on a “new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game. It’s too early to reveal more, but I’m so excited for when they’ll be able to.”

Hopefully, with Sony expanding its portfolio into the mobile gaming market, it will result in more than just simple “cookie-cutter” games.
It might be wishful thinking to hope its mobile games are not centred around microtransactions. However, we can hope that Sony brings some original ideas to the market.
