PlayStation Inventor Now Makes Robots (For No Pay)

The inventor of the PlayStation console, Ken Kutaragi, is now pursuing a pretty different career – building robots for no pay.

Kutaragi, who founded the Sony Corp. gaming business, has just taken the role of chief executive officer of Ascent Robotics Inc., where he helps to create budget-friendly robots to help humans with physical work in factories.

The news comes from Bloomberg, where it’s noted that 70-year-old Kutaragi’s career change comes without a salary increase – in fact, it comes without a salary entirely.

Speaking to the publication, Kutaragi explained: “The Covid-19 outbreak has turned the old argument about robots taking our jobs on its head,

“It’s pretty clear now that if we want to arrive at a new normal, we need more and more robots in our daily lives.”

The tech genius has accepted the role of chief executive at the new start-up company, in the hopes of helping the masses without taking a cut for himself.

The groundbreaking tech will blend autonomous driving with collaborative robots and it’s hoped that Ascent Robotics Inc. will have its first working prototype robot by the end of 2021.

While Kutaragi’s new career looks exceptionally bright, the future of PlayStation is also shining.

PS5 is now just a few weeks away from launch, and it’s expected to be one of the company’s biggest-selling launches to date. With launch titles including Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Godfall and Bugsnax, it’s no wonder that PS5 pre-orders have been flying off the shelves.

Both editions of PS5 will roll out in select markets including North America and Japan on November 12, followed by Europe and additional regions on November 19.
