SSD expansion slot support is finally coming to the PlayStation 5. However, Sony has some advice for those wishing to expand their storage, and it sounds like a bit of a faff!
The advice, which is aimed at beta users wishing to install an M.2 SSD in their PS5, can be found on a new support page. However, while guides usually incite some sort of confidence in those using it, Sony makes the process sound like a complex operation. Right off the bat, the page states that you’ll need the following [via Eurogamer]:
- A well-lit room with a table to work on
- A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver
- A small flashlight (optional)
As for actually fitting the SSD, the guide highlights a 12 step process that involves lots of screws and some very tight spaces. As you’d expect, the PS5’s cramped internal real estate means users will need to buy a specific size of SSD.
To make matters worse, the Xbox Support Twitter account also decided to dunk on the PS5’s seemingly complicated storage process. This is largely because storage expansion on the Microsoft console is as simple as slotting an expansion card into the back of the unit.
Ultimately, while PS5 SSD storage expansion will soon be a possibility, it looks like it’s going to require more than just an expensive purchase. That being said, if the whole affair does turn out to be a complicated conundrum, you could always opt to use USB based storage instead. Although, it won’t come with the benefits that SSD technology brings to the table!
